Release of the next beta for version 1.8 of My Little Forum

Hello

I proudly present the third beta version (1.8.beta3) of My Little Forum 1.8. The main change is the support of UTF-8 in the database, the scripts and the output (HTML, RSS-feed, e-mails). A further great change is the "theming engine". All relevant files and codes (templates, images, CSS, JavaScript) moves to a new directory structure ('themes/mlf1-classic', the work is far from complete) what makes the old files obsolete (template.html, style.css and javascript.js in the main directory, all images in img (but not in the subdirectories).

Please install the beta version after performing a backup of your old database content and forum script or parallel to an existing old version with an import of the data from the old installation.

Please report bugs, misbehaviour and further issues here in this forum or in the issues section of the repository on Github.

Development of a script to show the latest X postings on a forum-external-page, version 0.2.1

Hello

In the MLF-project forum the question about a script to show the latest postings on a separate page came up. After a consultation with the MLF-project-forum-member Alfie, who wrote such a script for his own forum (MLF1.8 beta) he handed the source code out to me and I began to rewrite the script for the up-to-date versions of MLF (2.4.x). The result is a small script that is adaptable to an existing website. The script works when installed on the webspace, where the MLF2-forum itself is installed. Currently the script works on a separate page but it is planned to introduce a template for inclusion in an existing web page in the near future.

- configure the script in the INI file
- load the database settings (database credentials, table names) directly from the forum installation
- adjust the HTML structure in the templates
- adjust the styling in the CSS file

You can download the script in its current version v0.2.1 from the Git repository on Github.

Please ask your questions here in this thread or open an issue on Github.

I installed an instance of the forum for development purposes. This will be my development point for the forum itself in the next time. The forum contains the new features (currently (2019-02-11) for version 2.5) and it is possible to break every when and then during testing sessions.

Everyone is able to post there as an unregistered visitor, no registration at the moment. Furthermore I disabled several features for the moment.

Icons for Responsive 1 now also available as a separate repository (exported)

Hello

I added the first SVG icons to my theme Responsive 1. If you are an registered user in this forum you can inspect it after activating it in your personal settings. The icons look graphically more or less similar to the default icon set Silk Icons.

Because the icons are scalable without loss of quality they are candidates for use in other themes. Thatswhy I opened a separate repository on Github and named it mlf-svg-icons. You are invited to criticise, to contribute and improve, and to use the graphics on your own.

Admin Moderator Ability to post a Thread that Appears in All Categories (exported)

This is an entry, that was exported to mylittleforum.net.

Just a couple of things I would love to see in the future possibly, regarding admin and mods abilities.

1. I would like to be able to create a category that is viewable by guests and users But only admin and moderators can post in it. For example I would like to create a "Announcements" category like this site but not allow guests or users to post in it.

2. When posting a thread I would like the admin and mods to have the ability to choose "all categories" so the thread shows up in all available categories. The reason being I have in the past posted Important threads about my website and users who have ticked "My category selection" boxes in their profile edit page have missed the threads. The only way to get them to see the thread is if I posted the same thread in over 15 categories and that is not practical.

Just two Ideas for your perusal

thanks

I have my forum set up for no editing after 30 minutes for registered users and no editing for guests. The problem comes when a user ticks the notifications box.

Which means if a registered user ticks the "E-mail notification on replies in this thread" box they have no way of un-subscribing at a later date unless they contact the admin which is annoying.

Each notification email should have an un-subscribe link so the user can click on it if they do not want to be bothered by notifications any more at a later date.

Administration of uploaded images (exported)

This is an entry, that was exported to mylittleforum.net.

Hello

While I'm working on my theme I looked into the list of uploaded images. Here, in this installation, I am the only one, who used this function until now.

I poked around and can state the following.

- The admin can decide to forbid image uploads or allow it for admins and mods or registered users or for the complete audience.
- There's no documentation about the uploading user.
- So every image is accessible for every visitor or user who is authorised to upload images her or himself.
- To check the upload directory an admin can use a FTP-client or the browse-uploads-view in the upload popup (uncomfortable at all).

I'm not sure if logging of the uploader and the ability to restrict the access to the images (other board and forum scripts restrict the use of the images to the uploader) is desirable. But at least the browsing of existing image uploads IMHO should be more convenient for allowed users to select an image for use and also for admins for administration of images.

Tschö, Auge

Show avatars on additional places (exported)

This is an entry, that was exported to mylittleforum.net.

Hello

I opened a new issue on Github to discuss an idea about avatars. The script is able to handle avatar images for users. The admin can allow them for the profiles or additionally for the postings. I like to show them also in the user list in the user area and for the logged in user the own avatar in the user menu in front of ones user name.

To unify the look (alignment in the list(s)) I propose also the introduction of placeholder(s). I have created a simple placeholder image in two resolutions.

32x32 pixels:

128x128 pixels:

Additionally it is also possible to display a different placeholder for not registered posters. So it would be an additional distinguishing feature.

Theme Responsive 1 release thread

Hello

First release 0.0.10 works with MLF version 2.4.7.

I updated the files of my personal theme to be compatible with My Little Forum 2.4.7. At the moment it is optimised to work in narrow browser viewports (i.e. smartphones, small tablets). Next step is to set the rules for wider viewports.

Registered users can activate the theme in the personal settings for testing purposes.

Update: the theme is activated as standard theme of this forum.

File version numbers

Hello

As discussed in the original project forum it is desirable to have a more robust handling of files, that have to be updated in the case of a new version. I want to continue the discussion here.

Summary of the old discussion is:

- the list of files in the update script can be inaccurate because of forgotten files
- the admin, who undertakes the update, can forget to update a file or directory

This is non-satisfying because every when an then a forum operator will report issues with the functions or the template because one of us (maintainer team) who packaged the update forgot to note a file name in the update script or the admin forgot to upload the css file or a subtemplate or a script.

The idea to solve this was to introduce a file version number for every single file. It could be a simple counter that increments in case of changes. The version of the file should be checked against a separate list of the file versions matching with the new version. Micha's idea was to increment the counter once before the release of a new version, mine was to increment it with every commit that affects the file. In both cases the theoretical failing point is to forget the increasing step of a file version number.

While it is no problem to carry a variable with the version number in the PHP and JavaScript scripts it is a bit more complicated for the HTML-templates and the CSS file(s). Even more it is problematic to handle a patched default template. The recommendation to copy the template and to apply the changes to the copied, own template dies away continuously.

The changes of the forum operator shouldn't be overwritten but our changes are often mandatory (i.e. new form fields) so the update must stay incomplete without the update of the template files.

As last for now: The variables should be checked after an update and therefore the variable names must be unique in the meaning of non colliding with other names of the "thousand" variables in the scripts.

So far the summary and a few considerations from my side.

Is the package for 2.3.5 available somewhere? I have an older install (2.0.2) that I would like to upgrade but I need to take it to 2.3.5 first.

Thanks!
